Members of Congress Concerned about Insurance Premium Increase — for Themselves

congress wants exempt obamacare not fair exemption

It’s like Nancy Pelosi famously said… we should pass Obama care so we can find out what’s in it.

After all, who would want to actually know what’s in an overreaching, draconian, unconstitutional, money suck law BEFORE we know what’s in it? We should pass the law and THEN question it’s worth and validity.

Members of Congress Concerned about Insurance Premium Increase — for Themselves

There have been a few different stories about ObamaCare that have popped up over the past couple days that paint a picture of how the law is hurting both businesses and average Americans.

On Tuesday, CBS News reported that a survey of employers shows that they are worried that insurance costs will rise due to ObamaCare. The Associated Press reported yesterday that health coverage may be too expensive for low-wage workers as employers will have to provide more costly insurance plans.

Now, members of Congress are worried that their health insurance premiums will rise because of a provision in ObamaCare that eliminates taxpayer-funded subsidies. How’s this for irony?:

congress wants exempt obamacare not fair exemptionDozens of lawmakers and aides are so afraid that their health insurance premiums will skyrocket next year thanks to Obamacare that they are thinking about retiring early or just quitting.

The fear: Government-subsidized premiums will disappear at the end of the year under a provision in the health care law that nudges aides and lawmakers onto the government health care exchanges, which could make their benefits exorbitantly expensive.

Democratic and Republican leaders are taking the issue seriously, but first they need more specifics from the Office of Personnel Management on how the new rule should take effect — a decision that Capitol Hill sources expect by fall, at the latest. The administration has clammed up in advance of a ruling, sources on both sides of the aisle said.

If the issue isn’t resolved, and massive numbers of lawmakers and aides bolt, many on Capitol Hill fear it could lead to a brain drain just as Congress tackles a slew of weighty issues — like fights over the Tax Code and immigration reform.

One could call this “shared suffering.” Of course, the only difference is that members of Congress are trying to fix the problem for themselves while Americans are stuck with ridiculously higher insurance premiums. Repealing the law to fix the problem for everybody, however, seems to be too much to ask.

Stay classy, Congress.

Texas Passes A Bill To Train Teachers As Armed Marshals

Texas legislators have sent a bill to Governor Rick Perry that allows schools to train and maintain teachers as “armed marshals” on campuses.
The bill, which had already passed the Texas house, enjoyed a bipartisan passage of 28-3 in the Texas senate.

According to the Associated Press, the bill enjoyed the strong support of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, who “pushed lawmakers to help school districts provide teachers or other employees with special weapons and tactical response training.” Dewhurst’s pleas were echoed by smaller school districts that could not afford to hire police and other security forces for their schools.

Under the bill, trained teachers would keep a firearm in a lockbox “within immediate reach.” It allows one armed marshal per 400 students and contains provisions to hide the name of that marshal from public record, to keep him or her from being purposefully targeted in an attack.

Teachers’ groups opposed the bill, arguing that protection ought to be left to security professionals. Yet because Texas already allows teachers to carry guns where school boards approve, the arguments against the bill did not prevail.

Senator Brian Birdwell (R) said the concern over law-abiding citizens possessing guns on campus is misdirected: “The Second Amendment is not about the gun, it’s about the right to self-preservation.”
