Michigan Farmer Pigs Ordered to be Killed and Livelihood Destroyed

A bizarre new law in Michigan declares native species of hogs to be “invasive” and those who raise them to suddenly be felons. All of their livestock, which has always been legal to own and breed, is now suddenly required to be destroyed to avoid legal prosecution. Farmers who simply want the right to raise their animals are suddenly felons facing the possibility of criminal prosecution.Michigan Farmer Pigs

There will always be a plausible reason given for such government action, but don’t be taken in by the rhetoric. Apparently the excuse this time is that feral pigs have been breeding and doing some damage to private property such as crops. Some citizens are upset by this and for good reason. But then shouldn’t the course of action be to destroy feral pigs that are already loose rather than to destroy contained pigs on private property? Instead the orders dictate that all breeds that look like or have any characteristics similar to the feral pigs must all be destroyed. Some such characteristics are black or red hair. Therefore, now, suddenly, the state of Michigan has the right to destroy the livelihood of  any farmer who has his farming operation set up to include livestock that has any black or red hair by charging the farmer with a felony.

Excuse me, but shouldn’t actions considered felonious be limited to such things as murder, child molestation, rape, arson etc. How did livestock issues become felonies anyway? Why do we fill our prisons with people who have not hurt others or damaged any property and then cry because our prisons are out of room and our funding has run dry? Then due to lack of room and funding, we operate a revolving door penal system and let the rapists and child molesters who have been “good” in prison out to re-offend.

The law declaring him a felon and the search by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources came as a surprise to one Michigan Farmer. Pigs that he had been diligently raising for generations had to be destroyed by his own hand before Michigan DNR arrived to avoid being prosecuted as a felon. However, not even that curtailed the harassment by the DNR, as they persisted in gathering search warrants and otherwise intimidating the farmer.

“To take what was six months ago an entirely legal activity, and suddenly people are felons over it. They’re not growing drugs, running guns or killing anybody, they’re raising animals pursuant to USDA regulations and state of Michigan regulations. They haven’t done anything wrong here, and the DNR is treating them like they are hardened criminals.” attorney Joseph O’Leary told NaturalNews in an interview.

“I have killed all my hogs. [DNR] gave me papers that say I do not have any hogs on my property. All they saw were dead hogs laying around from my mass slaughtering.” One farmer said on his blog “…sows with young, Pregnant sows, dozens of piglets, and old mature boars. It has been a sad few weeks. Does anyone know what it feels like to open fire on 20 baby piglets in one group which weigh between 5 lbs and 15 lbs. They are so adorable and cute. They commented to everyone that they never saw a fence built so tough and no way would a hog get out of this area.” (Bakers Green Acres)

The whole point of the second amendment is to give the people some balance of power so that they can protect themselves against the overzealous, tyrannical plans of a governments which tries to rule over citizens with violence as dictators. What is next? Take the second amendment and anything that says that citizens should have a balance of power OUT of the constitution? Or should we just continue to ignore it?

If the use of force is necessary to make a lawful and legal arrest of these criminal Michigan government agents, then such use of force is fully authorized under the United States Constitution as well as the Constitution of the State of Michigan. It is under these laws, in fact, that police officers are given firearms to use in the protection of the People. In Texas, the state Constitution even says that farmers have the right to use lethal force to prevent someone from committing a felony crime against their property. This includes shooting horse thieves, for example, and being in the right to do so.
